Elementary/Middle School Level: Starting Point
of Ozaukee delivers educational presentations to highlight alcohol, tobacco
and other drug (ATOD) prevention curriculum in grades 3 through 8. High
school students from the Peer Resource Education Program (LEAD) present
the 5th and 8th grade programs along with Starting Point staff.
- Elementary programs focus on good drugs vs. bad drugs, drug effects on the body, peer pressure
and refusal skills.
- Middle school presentations focus on facts and myths, advertising, peer pressure, building
assets in others and ourselves, transition to high school and LEAD as an alternative activity.
High School Level: A high school ATOD education
series and other specialized presentations are available through the
Starting Point staff to augment in-school curriculum. They
may include specific ATOD information, continuum of use, family illness concept, legal consequences
of underage use, county resource information and building developmental assets in themselves
and others. Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) awareness resources are also available.
The Starting Point of Ozaukee staff, in collaboration with the school
district, design and present an education program for teachers and
other school personnel. Topics may cover alcohol, tobacco and other
drug use issues relative to youth and family, the illness concept, advertising, developmental
assets model, resources, etc.
The Starting Point of Ozaukee staff has assisted in developing ATOD resource
handbooks and party guideline brochures for Ozaukee County communities. These materials contain ATOD resource
information which have included warning signs, laws, ATOD prevention and intervention information,
and information on peer pressure, depression, suicide, etc.
