SAIL

What Is SAIL?
A variety of group education and intervention programs designed to assist the young adult, middle school student or high school student, in assessing his/her own alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use. Issues assessed include the drug’s present and probable future effects on self, school performance and family life.  Referrals to the groups are made by parents, police, court system, school personnel, peers, Ozaukee County Human Services and by students themselves.

Groups and Services

Assessments: An assessment is a tool designed to examine an individual’s alcohol and/or other drug use patterns.  Based on the assessment findings, a recommendation will be made to address the student’s needs and prevent repeat offenses. Assessments are mandatory for every person convicted of underage drinking, possession, etc.  The assessment involves a personal interview by an ATOD intervention staff member who has been trained in the assessment process.  If an individual is under the age of 18, a parent will need to accompany their child for the assessment.

Education and Discovery: This series is comprised of eight one-hour group sessions designed to serve as an early intervention tool for interruption of alcohol and/or other drug use by youth. Strategies to increase the participant’s self-awareness about their use pattern, the use pattern’s effect on the major areas of their life and their personal risk factors are taught and practiced. These sessions are conducted on a rotating basis during the school day and after school.

Alcohol and Other Drug-Intervention Program (AOD-IP): These group sessions are offered to those youth that have participated in the Education and Discovery series, but have experienced a second violation or those youth that have been assessed as needing a more intense initial response to their risk for dependency.  This series is conducted outside of the school day and includes a total of twelve group hours. Parents are required to attend four of the sessions.

Young Adult Group:  An eight-hour group series offered for 18 to 21 year-olds with underage alcohol and other drug violations.  Three 2.5 hour sessions and a 30-minute intake interview are required.

Concerned Others: A support group for middle and high school students concerned about someone else’s abuse of alcohol or other drugs. Concerned Others groups offer participants factual ATOD information. The emphasis is on providing support and the strengthening of coping strategies.

Continuing Support: A group for students who want support for ATOD-free lifestyle and need additional resources and support.

NOT: Not on Tobacco (NOT) is a voluntary cessation program for students interested in quitting smoking.  This program was developed by the American Lung Association and is proven to work well for smoking cessation.

QUIT: A mandatory education/cessation group series for student tobacco use and/or possession violations offering strategies and support for a tobacco-free lifestyle.
